Bob Smith is a founding partner of DeMoura|Smith LLP. He has retired from the partnership and taken the status of Partner Emeritus.
Bob is a highly experienced trial lawyer and trusted advisor to individuals and a diverse group of corporate and institutional clients in a variety of industries. He is a leading higher-education attorney, representing colleges, universities and private schools. Our clients value his knowledge, insight, practical advice, candor and passion for their cause.
Trials and Appeals in Civil Actions
Bob focuses his practice on civil litigation, having successfully conducted trials and argued appeals in state and federal courts, including business disputes, commercial matters, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, claims of employment discrimination, disability discrimination, wrongful death, sexual abuse, and catastrophic personal injuries.
Independent Investigations
Because of his background as former in-house counsel for Boston University, Bob is often called upon by institutions and their legal counsel to conduct independent investigations of misconduct including, but not limited to: Title IX, sexual harassment, sexual assault, breach of fiduciary duty and other misconduct by employees including college presidents, faculty members, athletic coaches and security officers. He also represents clients in connection with regulatory agency and other external investigations.
Certified Mediator
As a certified mediator, Smith brings decades of experience and knowledge across the full spectrum of legal issues and thoroughly enjoys helping the parties to disputes and civil actions resolve their differences and settle their claims, thus avoiding the further expense, delay and risks associated with litigation.
Bob is also an adjunct professor at Stonehill College, where he teaches undergraduate business law.
Education
Smith received his Juris Doctor degree from Syracuse University College of Law and his Bachelor of Arts degree from New York’s New School for Social Research. At Syracuse, he was an instructor in Legal Research and Writing, a member of the National Appellate Moot Court Team, and served on the Law Review staff.
Prior to founding DeMoura|Smith LLP, Smith was a partner in two multi-state law firms. Smith was Associate General Counsel at Boston University. He also served as Chief of Staff to the President of BU.
